Choosing an Educational Path for Your Children
Submitted by Louise on Sun, 10/26/2008 - 13:42.Making a mindful decision about your children’s educational future has become an increasingly important concern for today’s parents. No matter which path you decide to set your children on, the important factor is to be sure it is a well researched decision that will benefit your children and your family. When you are beginning to consider your options you will most likely explore three basic possibilities; public school, private school or homeschooling. The options within each of these broad categories may be quite varied, but here are some important factors to consider when considering each possibility.
Begin exploring the public school option by getting as much information as possible about the school district you live in currently. Explore different sources for ratings and standards. Find out if there are any magnet or charter school options in your district and what the requirements are for enrollment at them. Go visit the public school your children would be attending. Meet with teachers and administrators to discuss any concerns you may have about the school. Schedule a visit on a school day so you can get a feel for the environment your children will be in for a majority of their day. Be sure to ask any and all questions you may have about average class sizes, student-teacher ratios, the school’s policy on classroom placement for multiples, discipline policies and curriculum, as well as other more detailed information you might be concerned about such as cafeteria options or the amount of fine arts education available.
You can approach exploring private schools in much the same way as public ones, however there are a few more factors to consider when looking into them. Be sure to find out what educational philosophy and teaching methods the school employs. And of course, make sure to get all the details about the financial considerations to ensure you have a clear picture of the per year cost to include not just tuition but any required uniform costs, transportation fees or other additional expenses.
Homeschooling requires just as much research and consideration as out of the home options. Be sure to consider different homeschooling approaches or philosophies to discover what might resonate with you and your children. Find out what kind of local support groups, co-ops or other organizations support homeschoolers in your area. Look into out of home options for learning such as homeschool classes at nearby museums or other locations. Educate yourself about the legal requirements, if any, placed on homeschoolers by your state. Talk to other homeschooling parents and children to get a feel for what homeschooling in your area really looks like. Also, just as with private school, it is important to consider the expenses. While on average, homeschooling is usually not as expensive as private school, you will still need to consider what sort of expenses for field trips, books, science equipment, art supplies and other materials you should expect and how that will affect your family budget.
The most important consideration when you are making decisions about your children’s educational path, is to locate an educational environment that ensures they will thrive. In order to make the best decision possible, you should be sure to thoroughly explore all the options available to you today.
